Matala black is used widely as drainage layer in dart frog vivariums due to its very sturdy and open design. Easy to cut and fit to the bottom of any size vivarium the Matala allows water to freely flow through the material promoting beneficial bacteria to colonize and cleanse the water.

How to use Matala
- Fit the Matala evenly across the entire glass bottom on your tank, combining pieces evenly together for larger tanks or raised areas (matala is easy to cut).
- The top line of Matala should be higher than your drain line in order to keep the substrate from standing directly in the water and becoming anaerobic over time.
- Use only a a substrate screen fit to the exact size of your tank covering just the matala, there is no need for extra layers.
- Add a few inches of tree fern substrate covered by a thick layer of leaf litter.
